What is a crimp connection?
There are various options for connecting cables to component terminals. In addition to direct soldering or using connectors, crimp connectors are often used. There are a variety of crimp connectors to cover different types of connections. Fixing wires for single copper wires can be directly inserted or screwed through the bending eye. On the other hand, multi-conductor wires must be bundled and securely fastened with crimp connectors to ensure a secure connection. The final connection at the end of the wire can now be plugged or screwed in. Connectors such as flat plugs even require flat sockets as connectors.
What are the variants of crimp connectors
Connecting cables securely without soldering them can happen in a wide variety of ways. In addition to simple connectors such as flat plugs and flat receptacles, you can also connect the cables using cable lugs. Cable lugs are particularly suitable for fine-stranded cables.
How are cable lugs mounted?
In order to be able to connect the cables safely with cable lugs, the end of the cable to be provided with the cable lug must first be stripped in its end area. Stripping length and usable conductor cross-sections are specified by the manufacturer for each cable lug. Then place the cable lug on the stripped end area. Then crimp and compress the cable lugs using a special crimping or pressing tool or a press with suitable dies. In this way, a force-fit and electrically conductive connection between cable and cable lug is ensured.
What do you have to consider when selecting crimp connectors?
When using crimp connectors, you should always pay attention to the cross-sectional dimensions. Some connectors can only be used with certain conductor cross-sections. Others allow certain cross-sectional areas, which are usually specified as maximum and minimum values. Many crimp connectors are insulated and non-insulated. The appropriate type should be selected here depending on the application. Insulated connectors should always be selected when there is a possibility of live contact. For example, insulated ferrules provide full contact protection. Crimp connectors are available individually in various pack sizes or as a kit. Kits consist of a number of different crimp connector types or contain one crimp connector type in different sizes. Crimping tools may already be included in the kit. You can use the color coding to distinguish different section sizes.
